Bulbapedia description:
Veluza is a fishlike Pokémon with a gray body; pointy, bright magenta fins; and red eyes. It has thin blue lines running the length of its body from its eyes, and its mouth is typically open, displaying several sharp teeth. Veluza’s fins extend underneath its flesh, to the center of its body; inside is also a row of diamond-shaped spikes similar to a backbone on either side, with three of these spikes being longer and protruding out from Veluza’s flesh.
My notes:
Veluza is one of my favourite Pokémon from Paldea because it’s so flipping weird. The description and the Pokédex all mention its ability to shed its flesh, which is something you cannot imagine on a real fish. It’s quite rare to behold Veluza’s internal structure but you can do so if you teach it the signature move Fillet Away, where it will reveal its gem-like insides.
I’m glad Mum didn’t get bogged down in the flesh-shedding business and instead stuck to Veluza in its natural form. It looks like a regular fish that sports sharp pink diamonds. It could certainly cause damage if you got too close to it, but how could you resist when it has such a happy smile?
Mum’s notes:
I was intrigued by the description, particularly in being able to see the bone structure through the body of Veluza. I didn’t know how to convey this sub-skeleton in my design. Finally, I settled on pale shadows to indicate where the dorsal spines continue beneath the outer body. I love the blue go-faster fish stripes that extend from the eyelashes. Fish can be very graphic – I hope I get another fishy Pokémon!
